How To Take an Effective Social Media Photo

After this unflattering photo surfaced of this well-known celebrity surfaced, there was a lot of speculation and comments about her image. Comments about her body, questions about her authenticity, or just plain judgments. We have all probably had a friend, family member, or even ourselves snap a photo and hope it never sees the light of day. Hopefully, with these tips, you can hone your picture-taking skills for the better.

Sometimes you really have to dig in to learn how to take a good picture. You can have the best outfit and confidence, but an ineffective photo is still an ineffective photo. So, here are a few tips you can use to take better pictures, especially for social media:

  1. Use Lighting

Learn about and use lighting to your advantage in your photos. Dark rooms and awkward lighting can result in a less than flattering photo. Bright, indoor lighting and natural sunlight are great lighting environments for taking compelling images.

  1. Find Your Angle

Explore and learn about the angles of photography. Front, side, other angled profiles express and convey entirely different things about the subject being photographed. Full-body photos, headshots, and other types of photographic expressions can be more deeply explored using these angles.

  1. Experiment with Positions

Experimenting with positions is an integral part of photographic expression. Be creative with your photos by exploring new ways to use placement or even movement. Look more natural in your photos by choosing positions that your body can be happy, comfortable, and relaxed. This is captured in your photos!

  1. Experiment with Backgrounds

Exploring and using different backgrounds is also a critical feature of taking effective photos. It is not uncommon to become a pro picture taker in the bathroom lighting of your home, but not so much in the dimmer conditions of the new restaurant you visited with your colleagues. So, practice taking photos in new situations. Not only will you improve your skills of snapping good shots, but you will develop a new understanding of how to use new conditions to your advantage. Starting could be as simple as going outside, even at different times, to experiment with new lighting and backgrounds.

  1. Feel Comfortable and Be Confident

Last but certainly not least, be comfortable and be confident. Comfort is so underrated, but it shows in your photos. Comfort and confidence are not mutually exclusive, so it is possible to be both. These qualities especially stand out in a social media photo, so be both when you can. In the past, we’ve explored ways you can build your confidence. We believe in the importance of self-confidence. So, explore and nurture the things that strengthen your confidence. Next time try snapping a pic before you do it, while you’re doing it, and/or after you’ve achieved and create a lasting memory you can share!

Fashion is such a great way to express yourself. It can really bring a photograph to life, but many photos online showcase airbrushed sometimes unrealistic expectations. And while the work of visual artists is respectable, so are regular-looking people and regular-looking bodies! More than anything, we should love, respect, and enjoy our entire existence for simply being! We choose to wear fashionable clothes to express ourselves and to effectively manage our personal image to the world. Rock with Alchemy!
